THE UNCONSCIOUS AND THE TIMES OF ANALYSIS ALDERETE de WESKAMP Mariel
The Unconscious, in its expression, produces its writing. It is my hypothesis that this writing takes diverse forms, depending on the times of analysis. In the beginning of analysis, the Formations of the Unconscious were produced to be read, offered as an enigma for their interpretation. The work of analysis, and its successive turns, allowed that the Formations of the Unconscious are no longer an enigma, but makes the desire transparent. I have been able to prove that at the end of analysis, and ever more in the testimony of "passant", dreams appear with particular consistency. In them there is no text nor argument: only shapes. These shapes are sometimes recognizable in the dream; at other times, only when awake. They acquire sigificance when talked about, and produce an Epiphany effect. These shapes will permit an access to the experience of the letter in the Unconscious. A letter that let one see the lines.
To show you what I want to say, I will begin with a fragment in which the story of a dream appears, and of its associations. The dream comes in the course of the analysis "of a young woman, who fulfills the role of wife and mother, as if it represents a scene, a role assigned from the outside. Her complaint is summarized in: there are so many things that a man can do and I cannot! She cannot find a anchoring place in this of being a woman. She begins a new analysis with a woman analyst. She finds something in the shape of her analyst that is familiar: it is similar to the shape of a woman in her family. This precipitates a relationship in her, so into the transference, that she re- edits the pre-oedipus link with her mother. Advised of this situation, she tells of her dream. In the manifested contents, that have an argumental development, an element appears: a mantle. The mantle covers or does not cover her body, leaving it naked and without protection, exposed to the eyes of the others. She associate: That mantle was given to her by her father, with whom she was united by a great love. When she used it, she felt great pleasure; linking this with a gesture that she attained from her current husband, to be covered by a mantle. In reality it was her mother that pointed out this gesture, showing her that with this man she could be well....covered. Her mother´s first boyfriend had had a bright social and economic status, one that her father did not have. She realized that this boyfriend had the same name as her actual husband. She believed that her mother loved her own father more than her father. In the course of such associations, she realizes that her grandfather´s name, the name of her mother´s first boyfriend, the name of her mother´s brother and the name of her husband all had letters that were found at the end of the alphabet: X, R, S, W, V, letters that for her were a confused pile, and were impossible for her to pronounce in order. She discovered at this point that the second last name of her father also began with one of them, the Z, the one that is at the end of the alphabet. All such associations allowed her to recognize her desiring mother, the desiring of her father with whom she had married for love. From this grand womb, treasure of the significants, darkness of the body of the mother, obstacle of the recognition of desire, an order appeared, that, by ordering the letters, permitted the circulation of the desire, and the possibility of recognizing the identification marks. The treasure of the significants, the devine treasure of inscripture. Inscripture is a term that I coined to designate that inscription that becomes scripture."
I will continue with the reflections that the transcourse of this analysis produced in me: That formation of the unconscious – the dream told – permitted, in its unfolding, the letters of the names of three generations, the playing with names, last names and multiple combinations, to mark the exact order of the metaphoric patterns. The process allowed that her own name was recognized as that with which the place was designated in the desire of the Other, fulfilling in this way the function of the suture. The turns of analysis, reviewed in the "Pase", made it possible that her own name was fragmented in particles, thus transforming itself into various common names.
This transformation was intermediated by the appearance of a strange dream. A dream that, using the writing of the unconscious it is revealed only as a shape, that is cut on a clear background and in color. An enigmatic shape, unprecise, that does not cause anxiety and allow one to continue sleeping. On awakening, it is called as a common object. By giving it a name, it enters into the chain of significant. The chain, in its displacement, uses the significant and the shape to allow the movement that makes the metaphor and becomes another name. By saying the new name, significance comes. Between one man and another, between one object and another, the metaphor indicated the point in which they had summarized years of life, years of analysis, important operations, significant lines. It was as if an element, when opened, when unfolded, when changing shape half-opened, to the depth of the first infancy, the story that it signed and what it could have done with it. The clarity of the Epiphany, the revelation of the Real, had produced an instant of bewilderment.
This object of the dream went on slowly changing its form in the second time. Shapes that insisted until, by guiding the hand, they drew a letter, the capital letter E. The letter, when drawn, showed through the line, took again the first marks – those of the phantom – and permitted, now yes, to play with her and go on taking diverse shapes. Shapes that were pieces of the Real, and appeared tied to the Unconscious.
They were these shapes that were drawn, in an experience almost oneiric, the shape of the letter "Y" (Greek i) This letter appeared drawn when the phantomlike image came loose. At the same time her own name was cut into two common names. And it stayed like a remainder. This remainder, the letter "Y" (Greek i), was what lacked – according to the associations or the first dream – the order of the last letters of the alphabet.
The "Y" that separates and unites, appears as a line, dividing, separating, taking away consistency, showing phantomlike positions, and the singularity of the significants that wove this body. "Y", that permits its writing as a letter. "Y", that permitted its drawing, lending its shape. "Y", that changed the phonetization of the name, transforming it into some common names. In this way it permitted, because it had already done so, to show threads of that knot that it had formed and reformed in another way. In that knot in which her "own name" was woven, the symtom woven for the significants intermixed with the desire and the Name-of-the-Father. The "sinthome" permitted the marks to be taken advantage of again, the exploration of new worlds.
By way of conclusion: In the first dream, the letter is united to the significant and to the sense that comes in the associations. In the second dream, a piece of the Real, when named, produces an Epiphanic moment. This moment, when spoken, produces writing, that is the shape and the picture of the letter. The letter arrives only as a line.
